One of the many joys of belonging to a writing group are the creative writing prompts that we all bring along. In a recent session, we were challenged to pick an image that we could see and describe it without using the letter A. This was harder than first thought, although we all agreed it would have been much harder if it was the letter E that was being avoided!
Below is my brief piece, which was inspired by a pencil case that has an artist’s take on the beautiful Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.
Trees surround the body of blue
Rugged stone cliffs
White clouds form behind
Snow settles on hill slopes
Studded with shrubs
Close to the ground, fungi sprouts
Colouring soil or trunks
Icy winds whip
Swirling mist or sleet
Then the sun emerges
Bright spikes of light
Before clouds cluster once more
Throwing gloom
But birds fly from tree to shrub
Their song brightens the moment
Until the clouds shift
They move on
Their song shifting with them
In this restless spot
