Bloganuary Day 24: Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

One of the wonders of the Blue Mountains area, located to the west of Sydney, is that there’s so much of it. It covers a broad section from the base of the mountains, near Emu Plains and Penrith, across escarpments through to the Wolgan Gap. This is about 100 kilometres of varying terrain, with many villages scattered along the way.

I’ve lived here for over a decade and there is still so much to explore. To narrow the scope, I did a search on the top 10 things to do to see what I’ve missed.

As a UNESCO World Heritage listed area, it is no surprise that bush walks and time in nature features at the top of the list. A close second is spending time at some of the many lookouts. There is something incredibly humbling about staring across a valley at the immense space that has been there for millions of years. Scenic World is a popular tourist destination which I’ve visited a few times. They often have exhibitions to explore as well.

Walking tours around Katoomba and Leura sound good, and I recently heard Sue Collins on a podcast interview about the history of the area. High teas are on offer at many establishments, including the Hydro Majestic and Bygone Beautys. Art galleries, wineries, and markets are popular too. There are magnificent gardens, including the Everglades at Leura and one of my favourite places, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah.

The only entry in the top ten that I haven’t been to yet is the glow-worm tunnel at Newnes Plateau in Wollemi National Park. I’ll be adding it to my list.

Are there attractions close to home that you are still to explore?
