Berry is a town that I’ve passed through several times over the years. It is a popular weekend getaway destination, located approximately 130 km south of Sydney. It was established in the early 1800s to support the logging industry. English oaks, elms, and beech trees were planted along the main streets in town, and it’s known as the ‘Town of Trees’. Berry has a wonderful streetscape with old buildings brimming with cafés, antiques, and boutique shops.

This was the third post office in Berry, and it was built in 1886. It was designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet, and was the town post office until 1991. The building was then sold, and it is currently in use as The Post House of Berry restaurant.

Now home to the Berry Museum, the old English Scottish & Australian Bank was built in 1886. It has Flemish bonded brickwork and an unusual stepped facade, and was built in the Scottish Baronial style. The architect was William Wardell, who also designed St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney and St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne. When the branch closed in 1942, it was bought by the Berry Municipal Council and used as council chambers and residence. The bank leased it back from 1951-1972. The Berry & District Historical Society leased the banking chambers in 1975, and has had use of the full site since 1984.

There are many delights to be found in walking along the streets in Berry. Among the beautifully retained and restored buildings are pops of colour, including this brightly painted amenities block.

The School of Arts in Berry was opened in 1906. There is a hall, stage and gallery, and at different times there have also been a library and billiard table rooms. It is still an important community venue today.

The courthouse in Berry was also designed by James Barnet, and built in the Greek Revival style in 1890-91. It operated as a courthouse until 1988, and was used as a police station until it was sold in 1994. It was in private ownership until it was purchased by the Shoalhaven City Council in 1999 for the community. Berry courthouse is hired out as a venue for special occasions, including weddings.
Berry is always a lovely place to stop and have a wander, with a mix of history and gardens, shops and cafés to explore. Have you had a walk around Berry?
