Dear Lucy,
It’s been a while. The days blur together. I’ve moved from emergency accommodation to a hostel, in some western suburb I didn’t know existed, all sun and concrete.
When we were last together, you offered me a place to stay, but he would have found me and made me leave.
Strange surroundings, wearing someone else’s clothes — the bright days bleach the edges off me. It helps me fade. I need to disappear, Lucy. Just for a while. Maybe then I can work out who I might be.
All my love — I’m fading, but I’m here
This was written to a prompt in my writing group: a malicious smile. I presented it as four separate postcards across the seasons, and the postcards will be “posted” over four days.
