There have been various celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the official opening of the Sydney Opera House on 20 October 1973. Some extraordinary moments associated with the Sydney Opera House can be found on its website, and there is a collection of photos from the opening and two-week festival of events here.

The unique architecture and engineering of the Sydney Opera House has contributed towards its place as an internationally recognised icon. The three groups of interlocking shells create an impression of sails from a distance. Designed by Jorn Utzon, the Sydney Opera House is on the World Heritage List.

There was considerable controversy during the construction of the Sydney Opera House, including cost overruns and the resignation of Utzon.

It is one of the busiest performing arts centres in the world. Up to 2500 performances and events are held here each year, with approximately 1.5 million people attending various concerts and events. Millions of visitors are also drawn to the Opera House every year.

The location of the Opera House makes it an integral part of Sydney Harbour, and the sails are often lit up as an outdoor canvas, commemorating special events including Vivid Sydney.

Whether attending a concert or performance, meeting at the Opera Bar for drinks and a meal or simply enjoying the view, there is something about the Sydney Opera House which draws people in.
